Green Implementation Action Program
The Green Implementation Action Program is part of the Green Infrastructure 2030 offensive and is used for the short-term implementation of measures in the 2020/21 period.
In a call for funding in March 2020, cities and municipalities were able to apply for funding.
Topics such as biodiversity, climate adaptation, protection of natural resources, environmental education, health and environmental justice and short-term feasibility played a major role in the selection of measures by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the RVR.
The aim was to create a continuous network of green and open spaces in the Ruhr area.
The measures were funded 100 percent by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

The action program was a funded by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia in cooperation with the RVR.
The following categories were funded: investment measures, land purchases as well as concepts and planning.
27 measures were implemented: 15 by the municipalities in the Ruhr Metropolis, eleven by the RVR and one by the Emschergenossenschaft.
A total of around 2.2 million euros in funding was available for all measures in the 2020/21 period.

As a project of the Ruhr Conference, the Green Infrastructure Offensive 2030 relies on the broad participation of the residents of the Ruhr Metropolis in the implementation of measures. The "climate trees" measure is an example of this.

08 February 2022: Green Implementation Action Program successfully completed
Several thousand climate trees issued to citizens, roofs and facades greened, neighborhood parks redesigned, nature reserves maintained and new bat roosts set up - the organizers of the Green Gap Closing action program draw a positive balance.
Overall, the RVR, together with the municipalities involved and other partners, implemented 25 measures in two years and invested over 2.2 million euros. Active local recreation also played a role. For example, a six-kilometre mountain bike trail has been newly laid out on the Schurenbachhalde in Essen.
In many places, quality has been increased in parks, gardens and green spaces close to where people live. These areas contribute to cleaner air, cool our overheated inner cities in summer and are also a habitat for many animal and plant species.
Last but not least: Especially in times of pandemics and lockdowns, public green areas are in particular demand and are held in higher esteem by the citizens of the region.
The RVR had started the 2020 action program with measures for the qualitative and quantitative expansion of green infrastructure. Cities and municipalities were invited, but also other public bodies such as water associations.
The aim of the program was to contribute to a continuous network of green and open spaces in the Ruhr area. Topics such as biodiversity, climate adaptation, protection of natural resources, environmental education, health and environmental justice and short-term feasibility played a major role in the selection of measures by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the RVR.
The RVR has taken on the advice and funding management for the municipalities, which means that the projects could be implemented particularly quickly. The state of North Rhine-Westphalia assumed 100 percent of the funding.
Green Implementation Action Program is part of the "Offensive Green Infrastructure 2030" - an important projekt on the Ruhr area's path to becoming the greenest industrial region in the world.
